You are more than just my father, you are my dad!

You are more than just my father, you are my dad!

Father and Dad are used interchangeably these days, but is there really a difference between the two? Let me tell you a simple story.

Two boys were talking while walking on their way home from school. The conversation ensues.

Boy A: My father goes to work early in the morning that he rarely have time to join us for breakfast. His friends love to call him “the energizer bunny” because he just keeps on going and going. I think he still loves us despite his hectic schedule because he makes sure that we have food on the table and I got all these wonderful toys that keep me entertained over the weekends. But, honestly? I miss my father because I seldom get to be with him. If he is not at work, he is with his golf buddies. My mom kept telling me that your father needs to unwind because he is so hard at work for us and for you.

Boy A: So what about you? What’s your family like?

Boy B: Well, my daddy is very busy too that he would oftentimes skip breakfast, but he makes it a point that he’ll check on me and give me a hug and kiss before he leaves. My mom always jokes that your dad skips breakfast because he’s making sure that we have food on the table. I guess my dad is a little nuts but I like it when he's home because I get to be with him and talk about my day at school. Do you want to know what makes him the best?

Boy A: He buys you toys?

Boy B: No. He watches my baseball game and keeps on telling me that I can do it.

There you have it folks, a father and a dad for these two kids. So, let me ask you this, who is your father and who is your dad? They are a little bit of each, correct? I don’t know what it’s like to be either, but I do know what it’s like to have them both.

They can be a bit “out of place” at times, and those intermittent deaf mute episodes just reinforced their eccentric tendencies. You may find them imprisoned in their deep thoughts, just as you may find them too silly for their own good. In other words, they are just as imperfect as we don’t want them to be.

On the contrary and given the right “setup”, they can be too emotional. You’ll have a conversation you’ll never forget and it is during these times that you’ll get to unmask their “pathetic” poker face. Yup, that is your dad right there.

They may keep a lot to themselves but they sure are a lot of fun if and when you get to understand them. If you still can’t, why don’t you send them a thoughtful card and watch them cry? That should be a YouTube moment, right? Besides, it is father’s day, or should I say dad’s day.

You can get those “Daddy I Love You” cards at PostalAnnex+ in Azusa, but if you really want to up the ante, send them something that they have always wanted and we can help you with the freight and shipping. Drop us a line at (626) 771-2340 or check our Facebook and Yelp page for inquiries.
